Bora Bora has a remarkably clear structure from the air: a volcanic core, a narrow coast, a wide lagoon and a reef ring dotted with motu.

Four visible layers

The central volcanic rock is dark and steep. Around it lies a narrow inhabited shore. The lagoon forms a broad band of changing blues, while the barrier reef and motu mark the outer edge. These layers record both volcanic erosion and coral construction.

The island should not be reduced to a postcard. Roads, villages, channels and the pass show how people move through this landscape and how the lagoon connects with the ocean.

Mount Otemanu as a landmark

Mount Otemanu is the vertical reference for almost every aerial view. Its appearance changes dramatically with angle and light. Clouds attach to its ridges, while long lenses can make the summit appear closer to the motu than it really is.

A wide photograph is useful for orientation. Cross-check Otemanu with Teavanui Pass and the outer reef before assigning a precise direction to an image.

Reading the lagoon

Light turquoise often suggests shallow sand, darker blue a channel or deeper water, and irregular patches coral formations. These are visual clues, not measurements. Sun glare, cloud shadow and image processing can alter the result.

Teavanui Pass is the main navigable opening in the reef. Its deep channel creates a strong dark line between lagoon and ocean and provides a reliable reference for mapping the coast.

Bora Bora in its regional setting

North of Bora Bora, Tupai has almost no visible central mountain and is dominated by its reef and lagoon. To the east, Tahaa and Raiatea share a single reef system. Comparing these islands makes the long evolution of oceanic islands easier to understand.

A careful field-reading method

Coastline, ridge direction, reef openings and settlement patterns should agree before a place name is attached to a photograph. When one element remains uncertain, the caption should stay descriptive rather than inventing precision.

Chronological image order, approximate viewing direction and light conditions help reconstruct a route. Comparing an oblique photograph with a map and a satellite image reduces confusion caused by perspective. This method is especially useful on islands where neighbouring valleys or bays can look similar from one angle.

Landscape, weather and responsible observation

Tropical light can reveal the lagoon while hiding the mountain, or make a shallow area look deeper through reflection. Cloud shadow is not a seabed feature, and a bright coastal strip is not always sand. Reading the scene means separating stable geography from temporary visual effects.

These islands are living territories rather than empty scenery. Villages, farming areas, cultural places and sensitive environments are part of the view. A responsible aerial guide names what can be verified, credits its imagery and avoids exposing a sensitive location without a clear public-interest reason.
